Busselton
Jetty Underwater Observatory (UWO) Progress Report
–
Blustery winter weather has provided plenty of
challenges for the construction crew who continue to
build the Underwater Observatory some 2km out to sea at
the Busselton Jetty. The
observation chamber is almost complete and the
Superstructure Entry building, which was built on shore
at the Jetty car park during
the past few months, was transported by barge to the UWO
construction site during fine weather last weekend. The
pre-fabricated building components were lifted into
position by crane and are now being secured to the jetty
decking and UDO observation chamber. The next exciting
stage will be the linking of all necessary services to
the UWO facility. Significant challenges still
await as power, water &
communication links are established from the shore to
the isolated UWO building.
The
new $3.6m Observatory will be a “must see” eco-tourism
icon. Visitors will be enchanted by an underwater garden
teeming with marine life, viewed from any of the 11
windows at various levels within the 9.5
metre diameter observation
chamber. Over 300 marine species
inhabit the vibrantly
coloured corals which
smother the Jetty piles. This remarkable natural
aquarium has evolved from a combination of the warm
waters of the Leeuwin
current, and the shade and protection provided by the
Jetty structure.

WHALE WATCHING - With Naturaliste Charters
Since last week we have
encountered
another
Eleven Blue
Whales! AND there are still lots of
Humpbacks and calves out there too. It just gets better
and better. The endangered Blue Whale is a fantastic
sight to see. Not only is it the largest creature on
earth, but it moves incredibly fast. You would not think
a creature of that size could move so fast or so
gracefully. They truly are a sight to behold.
Our
friends the acrobatic Humpbacks have continued to be
really nice to us this week. They have put on some
astonishing shows – Breaching, Spy Hopping, Pec & Tail
Slaps. The Humpback is perhaps the real show-off of the
whale family, and we don’t mind at all! It all makes for
an exciting and memorable cruise.

FISHING By Damian Lane, Dunsborough Outdoor
Sports and Hire
Good
weather for most of the week except for a bit of swell
in the earlier part, so all has been pretty well.
Visibility throughout the Bay has been around the 20m
mark, so it’s been great free diving over the past 5
days, I’ve come across sambo’s, dhu, blue’s, queenies,
harlequin, blackarse, pinkies, skippy and giant
boarfish.
Beach fishing was a little slower than usual, with very
little around in the way of larger nomadic fish, plenty
of herring, small gardies, even smaller tarwhine and
skippy though!
Squid have been a solid catch bag occupant for most who
have given them a go, of late all colours firing on
their given day.
King George are still around for those who are in the
know, with some chunky specimens in the Siesta Park
area, filleted mulies, fresh squid, coral prawns, ox
heart, sand worms all good baits.
Plenty of sizeable dhu’s have been caught over the past
two weeks, both in the Bay and in close on the West
Coast, 6kg queenie are also about in numbers in the same
area.
The DACC spear fishing club is having a limited species
comp on Sunday, so I hope to have some pics of that next
week.
The Dunsborough Angling and Aquatic Club had it’s
monthly spear fishing competition on Sunday, even though
the winds were up to 25-30 knot southerlies, some good
fish were taken, including Dhu’s, Sampson Fish, Queen
Snapper and Flathead. Juniors in the club did well with
Jaiden Mclean doing best with a nice Dhu and a 23 kg
Sambo, not bad for a 13 year old.

Featured Winery:
WE'RE WINES Margaret River
-One of Margaret River's
newest and most innovative vineyards -Cellar door
sales 10.30am -5pm Saturdays & Sundays. Located in Wilyabrup, WE'RE WINES was once the home paddocks of
the Karendale Horse Stud. There are currently 6
hectares of Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet
Sauvignon and Shiraz under vine.
Gordon and Diane Davies are the proud owners of We're
Wines, and to their knowledge are the only vineyard in
the region with sub-surface irrigation. The system uses
approximately 40-60% less water than conventional
systems encouraging the roots to grow downwards (which
is particularly beneficial when the wines are
establishing themselves), and pipe damage caused by
animals and machinery is virtually eliminated. It has
been used in Israel, California and the eastern states
for approximately 30 years, not only in vineyards, but
also in orchards, golf courses etc. The winery is
located on the corner of Johnson and Wildberry Roads,
with the entrance off Wildberry, just opposite Bootleg
Brewery. For Further information visit
