Congratulations to Shelton Wines!
The
CALEM BLUE 2002 SHIRAZ was awarded a gold medal at last
week’s Royal Melbourne Wine Show – outscoring all other
Shiraz entries from Western Australia.
It was
the only WA wine to wine gold medal in the 2002 Shiraz
class.
The next best from WA was Evans & Tate’s Redbrook Shiraz
(the only WA wine to wine silver). Other notable WA
producers to earn bronze included Vasse Felix,
Goundrey’s Reserve Shiraz, Amberley, Houghton’s Franklin
River & Gladstone’s Frankland River Shiraz’, and Capel
Vale’s Kinnaird Shiraz.
The
judges said of the 345 wines judged in the class
“a wonderful range of styles from sweet to leaner
controlled styles. A very exciting
class.”
“This
is the first show for the 2002 CALEM BLUE SHIRAZ, and we
believe it marks the arrival of CALEM BLUE as a wine to
be taken seriously. It follows on from previous
successes with both our Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc
Semillon, which have been consistent medal winners since
our first vintage of 2000.Our team of dual winemakers
Mark Lane and Bill Crappsley, Viticulturist Ian Davies
and Vineyard Manager Russell Oates have worked hard over
a period of years and we expect their efforts to pay
dividends over many years, with a continued high
standard of wines” commented David Shelton. For further

Moss Wood 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon
“Icon
is a much overused word, but Moss Wood undoubtedly
qualifies. Instead of empire-building –which seems to be
the norm nowadays – Keith Mugford spends most of his
effort just trying to perfect what he does. We admire
his approach. He’s done away with the Reserve bottling
and aims to make just one wine of reserve quality.
Current release 1999. This is
a monumental cabernet: almost painfully intense and
power-packed.” (Huon Hooke in the latest
Penguin Australian Good
Wine Guide)
MARGARET RIVER WINE SHOW 2003-set to impress
The
2003 Margaret River Wine Show, organized by the Margaret
River Wine Industry association, will be held from
Thursday 4th to Saturday 6th
December 2003.
The
second show will continue to focus on wine produced from
Margaret River GI fruit and will provide an opportunity
for wine producers to get a glimpse of the region as a
whole, to benchmark their wines and receive constructive
feedback.
The
show committee are working
hard with Raelene Pethica, this year’s event
co-coordinator, to make the 2003 event very special.
A
great deal of deliberation went into the choice of
judges, with a good mix from both the Eastern States as
well as WA, ensuring the highest possible caliber of
judges was selected.
To
maintain continuity and the show’s high standards, John
Hanley has agreed to return as Chair of Judges. The
judges for the 2003 show include Ian Riggs, Chief
Executive Brokenwood Wines; Lester Jesberg, Winewise
Editor and wine importer; Peter Forrestal, contributor
to Australian Gourmet Traveller WINE, and Homes & Living
editor, and author of numerous wine publications; Alex
Hudak, Manager Steve’s Hotel in Nedlands and Master of
Wine Student; and Vanya Cullen, winemaker at Cullen
Wines.

CENTRE FOR EXCELLENCE SET TO OPEN 2004
The
South West Regional College of TAFE, Curtin University,
Margaret River Senior High School and the Western
Australian department of education 7 Training have
combined to develop the Margaret River Education Campus,
which incorporates the Centre for Wine Excellence.
The
first students who will set foot in the buildings being
constructed on the Margaret River Senior High School
site will start a tradition that could see the town also
become a world renowned centre for wine education. In
addition to using the wine centre, the community will
have access to a range of education pathways including
vocational, secondary and tertiary courses.
Three
well known Margaret River artists have been selected to
participate in a $40, 000 project
to make art works for the campus and for the wine
centre.
Ian
Dowling, Kashmir Rouw and Michael Wise are each working
on separate commissions. Ian is producing tiles for a
water feature at the front of the main administration
building. Kashmir is working on a stone sculpture as
part of the retaining walls to be built throughout the
campus, and Michael is producing two abstract artworks
for the campus reception area and the winery.
The
artists are working closely with the architects and
builders to create a uniquely sculptured cast concrete
wall that forms the front of the administration
building.

WHALE WATCHING - Naturaliste Charters
More Fantastic Southern Right Sightings. Southern
Right Whales are still astounding us with their numbers,
antics and rarities. In the past week we again witnessed
unheard of numbers in Flinders Bay and were treated to
unusual activity by the normally placid Southern Right
whales. They came in close to us on a number of
occasions and showed off by Breaching, Pec Slapping
(Pectoral Fin Slapping) and Tail Slapping.
Then, as if that was not enough there was an ALBINO
SOUTHERN RIGHT CALF. This is the second encounter we
have had this season with an albino whale. The first was
an adult early in the season, migrating north.
The season just gets better and better and we will soon
be having cruises out of Dunsborough (Geographe Bay) to
take advantage of the great Spring
weather.

FISHING By Damian Lane, Dunsborough Outdoor
Sports and Hire
Late (August) -
The last
week in August has been surprisingly productive fishing
wise, even though the weather has been quite ordinary,
with a couple of nasty fronts coming through.
Dhuies, snapper, tarwhine and king george came off the
Four Mile. Land based spots produced tailor, herring,
whiting and skippy. There have also been plenty of crabs
and squid throughout the bay.
A couple of keen local anglers Chris and Ian had a good
day on Tuesday out off the Cape. They caught five decent
dhuies, a huge king george whiting
(a one off), some nice size tarwhine and a couple of
snapper.
The tailor have been coming on the bite at local spots
including Fish Rock (Old Dunsborough boat ramp) in the
early hours of the evening. It would probably be worth
heading down there for a fish, with your herring,
whiting and other local species making an appearance.
Apparently the squid are in absolute abundance
throughout the bay and are of quite a large size.
Quoting one local angler Ian: “they are a danger to
small children”. There are still plenty of crabs around
throughout the Bay, other spots holding large numbers
are around the Inlet and up the far end of Quindalup
near the Broadwater Resort.
Last Saturday I had a couple of locals bring a large
dhuie in the shop to be weighed out of curiosity. It
turned out to be just over 14.5kg,”a nice one!!”. They
caught it out at the Four Mile. Just some more evidence
proving it’s worth getting out there.
This week it would be worth throwing a line in at any of
your land based spots or even out in the Bay, with
plenty of fish about.
Week Just gone ( September)
-
Intervals
between hail storms, rain, wind and cold have been
patchy during the past week which has slowed the fishing
effort somewhat, but those making the effort have been
rewarded with some good fish.
Late last week a keen local angler Andrew along with son
Michael and friend Sean anchored near the end of the
Busselton Jetty squiding and burleying when a 100kg
thresher shark swallowed the whole herring on a bait
style squid Jig, the line was wrapped around a very
small handcaster so upon hooking the shark they cast off
and proceeded to follow and fight the shark over a wide
area. Plenty of drama followed before the fish was
landed, including nearly being pulled in and getting
belted in the ribs by a very powerful tail. The gaff and
squid jig both fell out whilst Sean had hold of the tail
but fortunately they were able to boat it! The fish was
cleaned and filleted straight away, not wasting any.
On other news a surprising amount of big dhu’s have been
landed by boats, both in the Bay and out off the Cape
when the weather allows.
Pinkies also continue to be a regular catch but some of
the Bay fish have been around the 41cm legal size or
under.
Bread and butter species have been a safe bet, with
better fish coming from the West Coast including some
quality tailor around 2kg.
