Iron man
Triathlon coming to Busselton – November 2004
Following the
successful Staging of the Busselton Half Iron-man
Triathlon
State
Titles for the past two years, the W.A. Triathlon
Association and the CNTA approached IMG (International
Management Group) with the proposal for Busselton to be
the host town for a full Iron Man Triathlon. Our bid
has now been accepted! A huge thanks goes to the
Busselton Shire Councillors for their strong support of
the bid, by way of a $150,000 underwriting of the
event. Eventscorp have been approached for a $300,000
contribution. The Busselton Iron man is set to become
the biggest event in regional W.A., with around 3-4,000
competitors, supporters, officials and media involved.
Not only will the event inject an estimated $2
million into the
local economy, media coverage will be extensive both
nationally and internationally. The CNTA played a major
role in securing the Iron man Triathlon event for the
region, once more delivering a real “return on
investment” for our members and the wider community.
Up
Date Busselton Jetty
The New Underwater
Observatory
project is all going to plan, the substructure is now
fully installed and secured to the seabed.
Devoid of water,
construction and installation of the internal steel
staircase and the precast concrete
(which forms
the landings and deck slabs) is now in process.
In the
coming months the progression of activities will include
final installation of the decks and slabs followed by
services such as electrical, mechanical and hydraulics.
Construction of the UWO superstructure (entry building)
will also commence on the foreshore in July. It will be
built, framed and roofed on
shore near the jetty in
three modules, before it is relocated by a barge, lifted
by crane and secured to the jetty deck. Watch this space
for more information in the future!! The Busselton
Jetty’s marine cam is now activated live on the

website.

WHALE WATCHING - Naturaliste Charters
Numbers increasing up to 40 whales a Day, there were a
couple of days where numbers got over 140 sightings.
Besides the entertaining Humpback whales who have been
putting on a great show for us by breaching, tail waging
and coming right up beside our vessel, we now have the
migrating Southern Wright Whales many of then are
cruising along with their calves.
Dont forget we operate DAILY AT
10AM, weather permitting, throughout the season. We
will keep you posted on departures, sightings and happenings
of interest. We look forward to another sensational

From Steve, Terry & Crew
FISHING By Damian Lane, Dunsborough Outdoor
Sports and Hire
Wild
weather kept most fisho’s at home but small windows of
opportunity were available for those able to take
advantage of the lulls in swell and wind.
King George were caught
in the Bay last week with some boats able to make good
catches of the prize eating fish, size was okay but
no really big fish yet.
Pinkies continued to be regular in most bags with most
fish up to 3-4kg range and a couple of fish up to 15kg
also caught.
Local fish club captain Joe Thompson managed a big hump
headed pinkie last week after work. The weight was
unknown but the fish was caught not far from shore. Nice
one Joe!
Earlier in the week some good tailor were caught from
the beaches on the West coast with some mulloway and big
flatties amongst them. Good gutters have been formed at
Smiths, Injidup and Windmills, all these spots likely to
be holding fish when the swell abates.
Fish Rock in old Dunsborough also produced tailor but
not as large as the fish on the West Coast. Herring
skippy and tarwhine are all coming from Fish Rock,
Castle Rock and Point Piquet when conditions allow.
Crabs were also a target species earlier in the week and
some good sized blues were amongst them.
A
break in the weather during the past 3 days has seen
crisp cool nights and sunny mild days, so plenty of
opportunity to wet a line. The West Coast has also been
fishable with a lull in the big swells that have been
pounding the coast.
Shore based anglers have been catching tailor, mulloway
(small), tarwhine and skippy and the ever present
herring and whiting keeping the kids busy during school
holidays.
Bream were a popular catch in the earlier part of the
week, but since the opening of the flood gates in the
Wonnerup they have dropped off in number.
Some good pink snapper and dhues continue to be taken in
the Bay, with a 17kg dhu taken on a lumo soft plastic
squid a week ago.
Squid have been a little hit and miss over the past
fortnight, clear water and a full tide seem to help.
Crab numbers seem to be improving, the closer to
Busselton you go the better the catches.

Featured Winery:
Capel
Vale Wines
Capel Vale began as a hobby for Sydney
radiologist Dr Peter Pratten and his wife Elizabeth
when they purchased land on the Capel River between
Bunbury and Busselton in 1974. This vineyard, Stirling
Estate, is the site of the winery and cellar door
tasting area.
With nearly 30 years producing premium
WA wines, Capel Vale is a leader in international and
national distribution. A consistent award winner
across their three ranges and all varieties has proven
that quality wine will prevail in the market place.
With the addition of their new Cafe Capel Vale,
at the Capel 'Stirling' property, this winery has all
the ingredients for a strong future. Renowned for its
stunning views and magnificent gardens, Cape Vale
Wines is definitely a stop on my agenda. Cellar Door
