CHARTERS
WHALE WATCHING - Naturaliste Charters
Yes, that time of year is fast approaching
and we are looking forward to a great season. We commence
with the official launch of the season in Augusta on
May 30th, with Mr Jim McGinty MHR and Minister
for Peel and the South West. We officially commence
whale watch cruises on the 31st of May
a little earlier then previously.
We have decided to commence earlier due
to sightings already occurring in Augusta very
promising for both sightings and the health of the whale
population.
Dont forget we operate DAILY AT
10AM, weather permitting, throughout the season. We
will keep you posted on departures, sightings and happenings
of interest. We look forward to another sensational
season and to seeing all our old friends, along

From Steve, Terry & Crew
FISHING By Damian Lane, Dunsborough Outdoor
Sports and Hire
The past week has been quite productive
for both shore based and boat anglers, with some exceptional
catches being made.
Local angler HEATH, managed a keeper double header
of nice pink snapper, next drop resulted in another
double hookup, this time a nice pinkie and a big flathead.
Later on Heaths fishing mate Pete managed
a 15kg pinkie and a size dhuie, all with no sounder
or G.P.S, out off Dunsborough on the 4Mile.
Good snapper continue to be caught throughout the Bay
on most evenings, with many local boats out on the water.
Skippy have turned up over the last three days or so,
with one of the dive shops saying that the schools of
skippy were so thick, you could not see through them.
Chris Barker, fishing close to shore off Dunsborough
on Tuesday, missed the pinkies but managed a couple
of nice dhuies as a consolation prize.
Sunday saw large schools of herring balled up
in between the gutters in Eagle Bay, with salmon and
sambos smashing into them at regular intervals.
King George Whiting and squid have been active off Siesta
Park, with boats prepared to move around finding fish.
Crabs continue to be more concentrated closer to Busselton
rather than Dunsborough.
Tarwhine, herring, sand whiting and skippy are all coming
from beaches in the Quindalup area, with late afternoon
being the most productive, coral prawns or blue sardines
being the best bait.

COMING TO YOU SOON
Busselton Jetty Underwater Observatory (UWO) -
The UWO is well on it's way to meeting it's completion
deadline of Spring 2003. Over the past couple of weeks
many of the Underwater Observatorys milestones
has been achieved. Construction of the substructure
at Jervoise Bay has been completed followed by its
relocation into the waters of Geographe Bay by tug.
The
highlight would have to have been the moment the substructure
was positioned into its final resting place near the
seaward end of the Jetty (approx 1.6km from shore).
The substructure is now being fixed into position and
secured to the seabed. To achieve this, the substructure
was filled with water (it took 500 tonnes of water and
was all done in 8 minutes). Steel casings are now being
driven down 25 metres below the sea bed. These will
house the 12 core anchors, which will soon go into place.
News
on the superstructure visitor entry building is that
the design stage has been completed and tenders have
been awarded. Fabrication of the structure will soon
commence offsite. The design will compliment the existing
boatshed architecture of the Busselton Jetty Interpretive
Centre. Watch this space for more information in the
future!!
Public
Donations - Rebuilding and maintenance
of this remarkable old jetty is an enormous task. Poorly
maintained for so many years following its closure as
a working port, millions of dollars are now required
by the community committee dedicated to the preservation
of the heritage listed Busselton Jetty.
Were it not for the generous support of the community,
the Jetty would have slipped into the sea years ago.
In December 1999, a devastating fire burnt 20 metres
of jetty to the water line incurring $900,000 damage
in the process. In a subsequent fund raising drive,
the committee received donations from far and wide,
including an incredible donation of $150,000 received
from an anonymous overseas philanthropist.
Large or small, your contribution will
go towards preserving the Busselton Jetty for the future
generation to appreciate.
Tax-deductible donations of $2 or more
can be made at the Busselton Jetty.
Cheques or money orders made payable to "The Busselton
Jetty Environment Fund" can be mailed to the Busselton
Jetty, P.O Box 851, Busselton, 6280, Western Australia.
Snippets
on Jetty
Each year, during autumn and winter, the Leeuwin Current
brings a narrow band of warm water down the Western
Australian coastline. This warm southerly current brings
diverse species of tropical and sub-tropical life into
Geographe Bay, resulting in coral growth at a latitude
of 33 degrees South. This is a remarkable phenomena
when compared to the west coast of other Southern Hemisphere
continents, Africa and South America, which have no
coral growth below 5 degrees South. The Leeuwin Current
is responsible for the introduction of an incredibly
diverse array of marine life into the Bay, with over
300 individual marine species having been recorded under
the Busselton Jetty.
Described as Australia's greatest artificial
reef, the Busselton Jetty is host to an awe inspiring
"forest" of vividly-coloured tropical and sub-tropical
corals, sponges, fish and invertebrates under it's 12m
wide seaward end. The Underwater Observatory is scheduled
for completion in October 2003 and it is expected to
quickly establish itself as one of Western Australia's
major eco-tourism attractions.
Designed to accommodate at least 45 people
at a time, visitors will access the observatory by travelling
1.6 km from shore along the Jetty and descending 8m
beneath the water's surface. Eleven viewing windows
at various levels within a 9.5 metre diameter observation
chamber will allow patrons to be "touched by nature"
as they look out onto an underwater garden teeming with
life. Provision of a lift within the observatory will
ensure that people of all ages and of varying levels
of mobility have access to one of Western Australia's
unique natural wonders.

Where To Eat:
Cullen Wines
Viticulture was first tested in Wilyabrup
in 1966, when Diana and Kevin Cullen planted a trial
acre of vines. The encouraging results led to the couple
planting 18 acres of vines on their sheep and cattle
farm in 1971. Cullen wines has since evolved into an
estate specialising in quality wines from single vineyard
sites.Cullen's full story can be found at www.cullenwines.com.au
.
Cullen Dining, This has
long been one of the best places to enjoy a quick and
casual lunch in the Margaret River Region, and you can
still drop in for a very good soup, a better-than-average
vineyard platter or the cheese selection. It is possible
to linger over more substantial dishes from a small,
neatly balanced, regularly changing blackboard menu.
Try something fresh, delicate and light
or relax with some comfort food to fortify you against
the rigours of an afternoon's wine tasting. There is
plenty of natural light and high ceilings in the cellar
door extension which forms the restaurant. Dine their
or on the outside veranda, close to the vines. Service
is obliging and the wines outstanding."
