Xanadu
Xanadu Fine Art Gallery presents "The Best of
Fine Art at Xanadu" - The exhibition will be opened
by one of Australia's leading wine judges Mr John Hanley
on Friday April 4, and available for general viewing
from Saturday April 5 - May 25. Mr Hanley is also past
chair of the Royal Agriculture Arts Society and has
a very strong awareness of West Australian Art.
The opening exhibition will include the works of many
prominent West Australian and Australian artists. There
will be a strong focus on sculpture and we will have
representation of some of the States best. They include
Len Zuks, Oliver Sage, John Denaro, Mark Grey-Smith
son of the famous Guy Grey-Smith.
The inclusion of sculpture in modern architecture has
created a stronger focus on a medium in art that has
gone unnoticed for much too long. The Xanadu gallery
will use this opportunity to maximise this and to also
utilise the lovely grounds of Xanadu Winery to display
sculpture. Featured Artists:Sylvio Aponi, Andrew Baines,
Wim Boissevain, Sheila Benford, Judy Cassab, Stephanie
Culling, John Denaro, Jeannette Dyson, Ken Done, David
Gregson, Rob Gomboc, Victor Greenaway, Mark Grey-Smith,
Albi Herbert, Jahroc Furniture, Geoff Juniper, Diana
Johnston, Heather Jones, Jim Kinch, Jerome Lyons, Greg
O’Leary, Oliver Sage, Ben Sommerville, Christopher Spaven,

Vasse Felix
Vasse Felix releases two new vintages in February:
2002 Chardonnay
Clive Otto, our Senior Winemaker describes the 2002
Chardonnay as, "elegant and refined, and the 2002
vintage as one of the best vintages for white varieties
that Margaret River has experienced for many years.
Pronounced aromatics and complex flavours arose from
the prolonged harvesting period and the several vineyard
locations around the Margaret River Region from which
we sourced the chardonnay fruit.
Higher natural acid gives the palate its fresh, lively
citric lime and lemon barley characters. Beautiful grapefruit
aromas meld with creamy, nutty notes lifting the bouquet
and balancing this wine’s 60% French oak barrique maturation."

2002 Noble Riesling
The 2002 Noble Riesling has structure, complexity and
balance. An extremely long vintage with a cool-mild
autumn aided the natural accident of nature - botrytis
cinerea.
Imparting aromas of orange peel and marmalade, botrytis
concentres the fruit characteristics with layers of
mandarin zest and lime. The sweetness balanced by the
high acid gives this wine a velvety texture – a quality
of a true dessert wine. The finish is long and clean,
aided by the subtle French oak tannins. Great cellaring
potential.

Boating
, Fishing , Dive , Charters , Surfing
By Damian Lane, Dunsborough Outdoor Sports and
Hire
Autum fishing has fired up, keeping many fisho’s happy
over the last couple of weeks.
The salmon run is still very strong with many schools
coming around the Cape giving small dinghy and rock
fisho’s a great chance to tackle these tenacious beasts
on light gear and fly. Many of the fish are coming close
to 15lb in the old scale. Reports tell of fish moving
into the Castle Rock and Meelup beaches, and as far
along as Quindalup. There are of course the visual predatory
nasties following these schools. Herring are also around
in good numbers and some could definitely be ranked
in the “bull” category. The skippy have also come to
the party, with dinghy fisho’s doing well off Castle
Rock and Eagle Bay.
With the start of the Naturalist Game Fishing Club “Blue
Water Classic “ on Friday we should see some interesting
fish come in for weighing, and I’ll bet the recent capture
of an 80kg black marlin, (along with several washed
up), will see a little more time spent dragging skirts
and lures through the water. Don’t be surprised to see
more pelargic species such as spanish mackeral, mahi-mahi,
and tuna coming across the gunwale.
What other surprises is the Leeuwin current going
to throw at us? As if the unusual catches of mud crabs
in our South West wasn’t weird enough. In recent times
some truly amazing catches have been reported (along
with photographic evidence) starting with the significant
numbers of baldchin groper apparently aggregating in
Geographe Bay to breed. Although line captures have
been rare divers are reporting good numbers and in some
places only a mile or so off shore. More surprising
still was the capture of a solid 8kg red emperor near
Naturalist Reef off the Cape, where scientists believe
the fish was carried down from it’s typical location
on the current in a larval or juvenile form before residing
at the reef and ultimately acclimatising and flourishing.
This is in contrast to the latest amazing developments
where a black marlin was washed ashore near Mandalay
Beach and an 82kg black was caught in the bay. More
than likely these powerful hunters were following the
strong and warm currents present off the coast at the
moment. These water movements are also a trigger for
the annual salmon run and determines how strong the
run will be.
In other news the salmon and good tailor numbers have
kept anglers happy with plenty of fish over a wide area.
Bait and lures have been working well on the West Coast
while in the bay, live herring are taking good salmon.
The area off Grace Town and to the South has been fishing
well for the past two weeks with catches of good size
dhuies and nannagai not too far out.
Some sharks are being spotted along the West Coast beaches
shadowing the salmon schools, a few locals intend to
target them this year, will keep you posted.
There are plenty of sardines, gardies, anchovies, whitebait,
herring and whiting in the Quindalup area waiting to
feed the hungry schools heading north. Recently some
large flathead have come from the beaches in this area
as well.

Surfing
By Bay Dive (Swan Ship Wreck Charters)
Firstly, we would like to congratulate our once Dive
Master Louise on passing her instructors exams with
excellent results and also welcome our new dive master,
Nick, a casualty Nurse and experienced D.M. to our team.
Also, well done to Hans & Carla a couple of our
recent divers. A few months ago, one of the local divers
lost his wedding ring whilst diving on the Swan and
miraculously Hans & Carla found it lying among the
weed near the Gun Turret last week. After managing to
contact the diver, arrangements were made and it was
returned safely to its overjoyed owner.
With some beautiful weather recently and the visibility
getting back up to 20 – 25 metres, some excellent diving
has been enjoyed on the Swan and Busselton Jetty.
Sightings of Wobbegongs and a couple of baby Port
Jacksons on the Jetty along with all the usual suspects,
Occys, Rays, Cuttlefish and Nudibranchs have made for
some interesting night dives over the last few weeks.
Our D-Mix NITROX system is running at full tilt with
instant fills available to our suitably qualified divers
and courses will be running over the following month,
including Wreck & Nitrox for those wishing to enhance
their experience whilst on the Swan.
Looking forward to seeing you all . Happy Bubbles,
Dan Bish

Cecily & I both had a lovely luncheon at Palandri

It has been a long while since I have had a Caesar salad

pricing very reasonable. We also enjoyed their current

desserts. We both recommend you to try their Wine Cafe.
