General News
Bay Village Resort News
We apologise for the 'gap' in between newsletters,
however, "the best laid plans go astray!!!" Winter has
bought with it its fair share of "hiccups', but now that
the sun has started to shine it seems the resort
re-development plans are set to proceed after all.
Realistically, we expect minimal disruption to guests
throughout the ensueing months with the proposed
building -which we are assured will commence any day
now. The main inconvenience being the lack of a childrens playground, is fortunately compensated with a
play area just 200 meteres down Dunn Bay Rd on the beach
front All the existing units have, or are being
refreshed in readiness for summer, and you will find our
cottages, chalets and villas, just as comfortable and
cosy as always. Thank you for your patience during this
transition.
Milesaway Tours
-
has recently launched a
new Wine Tasting Tour. A Half Day Margaret River Wine
Tasting Tour ($40 per adult) 12noon – 6.00pm. The
tour features wine tasting at 6 of the Region’s
corporate and intimate wineries. The focus is on
quality, the tastings leisurely and will include red and
white wines, ‘stickies’ and ports. Special wine
discounts apply with personalised service guaranteed. A
taste sensations platter will be served on board the air
conditioned/heated coach including a visit to the famous
Margaret River Chocolate Company. Bookings can be made
at the Busselton and Dunsborough Visitor Centres.
Wildflower Season
- The best months to
view wildflowers in the Cape Naturaliste area are
September, October & November. There are many beautiful
drives in the area to view wildflowers and one of the
best is driving to Meelup Beach. At Meelup you can park
and follow one of the walks in the area. Drive to the
Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse and follow one of the many
marked walks. One of the walks takes you to a whale
viewing platform. Visit Ngilgi Cave or even drive to
the carpark to discover some beautiful wildflowers on
the side of the road and on the various walk trails.

BOATING
If your boat hasn’t been
used much or maybe not at all over winter it pays to do
some, basic maintenance work to ensure a trouble free
diving outings.
In
conjunction with regular servicing, here are some things
you should check.
Replace old fuel with
new, or use a fuel conditioner. Fuel can go off after a
period of time.
Inspect fuel tank for
cracks or corrosion.
Check the fuel filter
for signs of water. Clean or replace.
Give the motor a good
run at home before taking it to the ramp, just to make
sure everything is starting
Have a good look for
signs of corrosion, cracks, and general wear and tear.
Test the steering for
stiffness and give it an oil/grease for good measure.
Make sure the bungs are
in good condition and that you have a spare or two.
Have a critical look at
your anchor, chain, shackles and rope and make sure they
are in good condition.
Give the radio a test
run, listen for a weather call or call a Sea Rescue
Group for a radio check.
Test the bilge pump and
don’t forget a bailer.
Check the wheel bearings
on "trailer" by looking for
sideways play in the wheels. Wheel bearings require
regular servicing. They can deteriorate quickly if
sand and water get into the bearing area and faulty
bearings can cause the loss of a wheel and spoiling
your whole planed day out.
Treat the winch with a
de-watering spray, it will thank you. Check the cable/
strap for fraying and replace immediately if required.
Check your trailer
lights and don’t ignore any faults.
Make sure all the
rollers are working ok.
"Safety
Equipment". Please ensure you have all the
correct safety equipment. Ensure it is in date and
stowed so that a) if you need it you can get to it and
b) it will be in good condition and do the job it is
meant to do.Make sure you’ve got all of it, you don’t
have to smile when you buy it, but buy it as it could
save life's. Keep it in date, stow in a dry accessible
place and treat it with love, care and tenderness. With
common sense boating is a safe pastime, this gear just
makes it safer. See our dive section below

Whale Tales with Naturaliste
Charters
During
the past week we have again enjoyed a
100% sighting rate on each cruise.
Add to that sightings of up to
FIFTEEN whales during a
cruise and you can see we have been having lots of fun
during the holidays.
Not
only have we had the benefit of good sightings but we
are
still being treated to fabulous action.
The whales performed all their usual tricks –
Spy
Hops, Tail & Pectoral Fin Slaps, Breaches, Muggings –
you name it, they did it.
Geographe Bay (Dunsborough) must be the Cetacean Aquatic
Playground! Last
Sunday a pod of
TWENTY BOTTLENOSE DOLPHINS
stayed with us for some time and seemed to be escorting
a lone Humpback. These dolphins were very playful,
presenting our passengers with incredible action and
enabling them to take some great photos to show when
they got home. Complements -

FISHING By Damian Lane, Dunsborough Outdoor
Sports and Hire
"There has been some good
catches of squid from the Jetty and some exceptional
catches on the 4 mile.
On the beaches whiting has been abundant from Forest
Beach right through.
The crabs are still around in good numbers, what a
season we have been having. They just seem to go on and
on.
The rivers have been quiet with only a few bream being
caught on soft plastics. One thumper was landed this
week but good luck trying to get any information out of
the angler!
It
has been another pretty good week on the piscatorial
front for both visitors and residents of the cape
region. Apart from last weekend the weather has been
fairly mild, a little cool in the early mornings but
fairly light winds in the main.
Plenty of king george are still on the go in the bay
with some days firing with the fish “biting like blowies”
while on other days a little perseverance and a little
shifting around is still producing the goods. Most fish
are in the 400g-500g-size range. Good catches of squid
are still being made in the Dunsborough area as well.
When the west coast can be accessed some great fishing
both land based and from boats can be had. Some
impressive catches were made last week including a
thumping big 24kg dhu, good pinkies most in the 3-5kg
range as well as a couple of 7-9kg specimens.
Boats have also reported quite a few undersized dhufish
being caught, make sure you have a dhu survivor
retriever to help release undersize fish on board.
The beaches on the northern end of the west coast have
all produced some good fishing when the swell was low
enough to be fished. Some nice chunky tailor have been
caught at Smiths after dark of late.
Beaches and rocks in the bay have also had a bit
happening with good numbers of herring around as well as
skippy, tarwhine and the occasional salmon all being
caught.
A couple of weeks ago whilst fishing the Blackwood with
lures for bream, a friend of mine Andrew Natta hooked up
on a decent fish and while I was maneuvering the boat,
netting the fish and taking a photo or two my rod and
reel and lure went over the side. After some halfhearted
dragging an anchor over the bottom I had given it up for
lost. Imagine my surprise when Rob Madaffri walked into
the shop with it all in good working condition.
It seems Bill Anderson of Blackwood Charters had found
it and serviced the reel and had mentioned it to Rob who
realised where it had come from, so a big thanks goes
out to Bill. If anyone is interested in spending a day
throwing lures or fly for bream on the Blackwood they
should give Bill a call on 0428 822 551 and spend a day
with the man."

SCUBA DIVING
with Bay Dive (Swan Ship Wreck Charters)
" We
are in full swing here at Bay Dive offering Swan Ship
wreck & Busselton Jetty Charters & Open water dive
courses Including Wreck & Nitrox courses as well as many
other specialties"
The 15th
of November is an important date for many West
Australian scuba divers as it marks the start of the
Rock lobster season for this state, the season ending on
the 30th of June. Firstly you must have a current WA
fishing license endorsed for rock lobster.
During the season Western Rock lobsters (crayfish) may
be taken by divers using scuba equipment, provided a few
basic rules are followed. They may be caught by hand,
hand-held snare or blunt crook. Spring loaded cray loops
are the preferred option and these are available in a
variety of lengths from most dive shops. Any device
which spears, punctures or damages the lobster is not
permitted.
Bag Limit :- There is a mixed daily
limit of 8 (any species) per licence holder or 16 per
boat for 2 or more licences in any 24 hour period
regardless of the number of licences on board the boat.
Tail Clipping :- You must clip/punch the central
flap of the tail of the lobster within 5 minutes of
catching them. Minimum Legal Size :- Between 15th
November and 31st January the carapace (body) length
must be at least 77mm long. This is reduced to 76mm for
the remainder of the season. Crag gauges are readily
available in your local dive shops. Breeding Stock:-
You must not take the female western rock lobster in
breeding condition (setose/tar spot) of lobsters
carrying eggs (berried) at any time.
Word Of Warning :- A
word of warning, fisheries impose heavy fines on anyone
breaking the rules, so make sure you are doing the right
thing, ignorance of the law is no excuse. Contact the
Department of Fisheries for further information and
regulations relevant to the area you fish and the type
of fishing activity you wish to undertake. A
comprehensive brochure on Rock Lobster is available from
all Fisheries offices and will be posted to you with
your licence.
